Interview: Time Management, on Michigan Business Beat

June 26, 2014 By Barry

I’ve become a bit of a regular guest on Chris Holman’s radio show, Michigan Business Beat. A couple of weeks ago, we discussed time management – one of the biggest issues facing many people who hire a coach.

In this 6-minute interview, we cover:

  • My workbook, Time Management Strategies and Tactics (you can get a copy by following the instructions here).
  • Why “time management” is a bit of a misnomer, and we should instead think about “energy management” and where we allocate our energy.
  • The importance of saying “no” because of our underlying “yes” to other commitments.
  • How life and work fit together, including the concept of life balance and the importance of enjoying your work.
  • My “more, less, start, stop” framework for assessing and changing the activities in your life.

Interview: Business Coaching, Soft Skills, “Intrepreneurship” and New Perspectives

May 13, 2014 By Barry

I’ve been interviewed again by Chris Holman of Michigan Business Beat. We had a wide-ranging discussion, centering on coaching within the business world.

In this six-minute interview, Chris and I discuss:

  • “Soft skills for hard times” and how many people were let go in 2008-9 who had technical competencies but didn’t possess the softer skills of leadership, management, and coaching.
  • How people need to be versatile and wear many hats in smaller companies, developing their technical and softer skills.
  • The idea of “intrepreneurship”, including innovation, creativity, and the necessity of emotional intelligence.
  • Welcoming diverse perspectives (e.g. from people much younger or older than yourself).
  • Coming up with new ideas and new approaches by reading a wide range of materials from a variety of industries.

Interview on Coaching with the Michigan Business Network

May 28, 2013 By Barry

I had the pleasure of being interviewed on the Michigan Business Network’s radio show “Association Impact” last week. During the discussion, I answered questions such as:

  • What kind of process do you use when working with executives?
  • What makes a coaching process more effective than training alone?
  • What does a typical coaching relationship look like in terms of time commitment and costs?

You can listen to the interview (in two parts) below:

Quotching: Coaching Through Powerful and Inspiring Quotes

May 20, 2013 By Barry

I just got back from a conference where we were encouraged to create new and different approaches to accomplish our goals.

One thing we learned is that to create a strong brand, it’s helpful to have your own unique word. Given my love of quotes and my love of coaching, I came up with the word quotching, which is simply coaching through the use of powerful and inspiring quotes.

I have registered the domain www.quotching.com and will be creating a site there.

Your Help Needed!

The Quotable Coach currently has over 600 subscribers, but I want to get these 30-second nuggets of inspiration and motivation out there for an even larger audience.

If you were me, what creative, innovate, or novel approaches would you use to bring these 250+ quotes (so far) to more people?

Please leave a comment below to let me know your ideas.
