Masterful Networking: Part 2

July 23, 2019 By Barry

Prior to Events, and on Arrival

Image from Unsplash

Do you look forward to attending networking events, and feel excited about the new contacts who you’ll meet? If you’re well prepared, you’ll feel confident – and you’ll be able to take advantage of all the opportunities that come your way during the event.

• Arrive EARLY: You can meet the hosts and sponsors of the event, and also act as a host yourself by greeting those who are arriving.

• Plan to leave LATE: This give you additional time with people, and some extended, more intimate conversations.

• SCAN The Sign-In Sheet: Learn who will be there!

• Come Prepared: Have a good pen, business cards, and other materials.

• Leave Your Phone in the car: Or at least put it on Airplane mode so you are not disturbed.

EXERCISE: Start going to more events and seminars. They are opportunities to gain shared experiences. Consider volunteering with a local organization in order to demonstrate your expertise and gain more contacts. As Ivan Misner – founder of BNI – aid, “When you network, you gotta get out of your cave.”

What two or three actions will you take this week to get out of your cave?

Interview with Doug Gfeller of The Coaching Perspective: How I Got Started as a Coach

July 28, 2014 By Barry

I had the pleasure of being interviewed by Doug Gfeller of The Coaching Perspective recently, about “Building an Online Audience.” I’ve split the interview into short segments and will be posting them here over the next few weeks. • Why I left this profession and worked instead in pharmaceutical sales, and what these two careers had in common for me.
  • How the 1992 Olympic Games inspired me to become a coach and support professionals in achieving “gold medal” levels of performance.
  • How I work as a coach, and how my business has changed since I started 21 years ago — particularly in terms of finding clients.
  • The typical clients who I work with and the length of time I normally work with them.

Interview: Business Coaching, Soft Skills, “Intrepreneurship” and New Perspectives

May 13, 2014 By Barry

I’ve been interviewed again by Chris Holman of Michigan Business Beat. We had a wide-ranging discussion, centering on coaching within the business world.

In this six-minute interview, Chris and I discuss:

  • “Soft skills for hard times” and how many people were let go in 2008-9 who had technical competencies but didn’t possess the softer skills of leadership, management, and coaching.
  • How people need to be versatile and wear many hats in smaller companies, developing their technical and softer skills.
  • The idea of “intrepreneurship”, including innovation, creativity, and the necessity of emotional intelligence.
  • Welcoming diverse perspectives (e.g. from people much younger or older than yourself).
  • Coming up with new ideas and new approaches by reading a wide range of materials from a variety of industries.
